The Rise of A Killer's Confession: Breaking Free from Musical Trends

Updated: Jan 19

When Waylon Reavis left Mushroomhead, he stepped away from a band known for its theatrical masks and elaborate stage personas. Instead of continuing down that exact path, Reavis chose a different route that focuses on authenticity, personal expression, and artistic depth. This decision gave birth to A Killer's Confession. They are an American alternative metal band from Cleveland, Ohio, formed in 2016. The band’s journey reflects a deliberate break from gimmicks and today's fleeting musical trends. On occasion he still breaks out a mask as part of the creative process. The band aims to create music that resonates on a deeper level, unfolding an eventful story at every turn.

A Fresh Start

Waylon Reavis’s start of A Killer's Confession was a shift in creative philosophy. Reavis shredded some layers, did some deep soul searching, and began to focus on music that felt genuine and personal. This fresh start meant no gimmicks. It is raw emotion and honest storytelling through musical layers. The goal was to build a connection with listeners based on the art itself providing an imaginary visual spectacle. Listening to the lyrics plays a short film in your mind. This decision set the tone for A Killer's Confession’s sound and message. The band's message is also relayed on their merchandise, and the message is greatly selling everywhere.

Crafting a Unique Sound and Message

From the beginning, A Killer’s Confession aimed to stand apart from the crowd and did not chase popular trends in metal or alternative music. The band focused on creating a sound that was both unique and meaningful. This approach meant blending heavy riffs with melodic elements and lyrics that explore the storytellers’ struggles, resilience, and hope.

The band’s debut album, Unbroken, released in 2017, started to showcase this vision. It featured a collaboration with Korn guitarist Brian "Head" Welch on the title track, adding a layer of credibility and depth to the project. Over the years the band has had other important collaborations and continues to honorably value every single one. I had the chance to hear about those adventures.

The Importance of Artistic Integrity

A Killer’s Confession’s story highlights the importance of artistic integrity in a music industry often driven by commercial success and fleeting trends. The band focuses on what feels true to them. The band creates music that connects with fans on a personal level. This connection is evident in their live performances and growing fanbase. Fans appreciate the honesty and rawness that comes through in their songs. It is creating a loyal community that values substance over style. Goal met.

First Meeting

When I first met Waylon and the band, they were touring with another headliner I was working with at the time. Gossip always circulates as everyone has an opinion respectively and their own life experiences. I am glad I always make a point to get to know other souls on my own and do not heed others’ views. His adorable pup Tank is what initially drew me into their dressing room to chat one day and squish his face with kisses. I am a sucker for touring dogs and need to snuggle and take photographs with all of them.

Waylon's "Southern draw" made me giggle a bit. I have had great conversations with him and his down-to-earth wife Julie as they were very welcoming. Over our brief but growing time we have shared work experiences, laughs, and some very sad shared trauma along the way. I truly value my relationships with every crew and band member I have worked with over the past two and a half decades. Building memories and connections, even brief, makes a lasting impact on my heart.

What Fans Can Expect Next

The band’s live energy and emotional delivery helped build momentum. They draw attention from metal fans looking for something authentic. Their performances emphasize the music’s emotional core. Listeners experience the band’s message firsthand. A Killer’s Confession has continued to evolve. They are still releasing new music and currently touring to expand their reach.
